A Horse Called Ringo

Watch the video below to see why she’s stolen my heart… She will be sold on Saturday, September 15.

It was the most stunning sunset… something so amazing that we decided to actually pull off the road to take pictures. I’m so thankful we did. I had wandered into the corner of a lot, not even knowing that I was inside a pen at an auction. As I was taking pictures, I heard footsteps behind me… I turned to see a horse coming my way and, to be honest, at first I was a little frightened. I turned my camera and hit record. I watched her slowly walk up to greet me. I could tell by her energy that she was a gentle being, so I put down my camera and went up to her. I noticed her step was a little startled, but she kept following me.

That was last Saturday, September 8, and, since then, she has taken over my thoughts. I have learned that she was dumped at the auction because she’s lame and the owner has left town. I also found out that this mare was once a popular horse in her small town; she did it all, including a ride through the bar once. Now, she’s no longer wanted. She’s been neglected for quite some time, developing a painful condition called founder. I have tried to negotiate with the auction house to release her to me because this disease, if caught early, can be quite treatable. With each day that passes (I’ve had a vet analyse the footage), her condition gets worse. However, I’ve been told three times now, “She’s going through on Saturday. You can buy her then.”

So, please watch the video and help if you can!Β If many of us contribute $20, we should have enough to buy her!

A Horse Called Ringo from backyard activist on Vimeo.

We have a sanctuary that has agreed to take and care for her.

We need the funds to purchase her. (She will likely go for $300 – $600 as meat prices are low.)

We need her to be seen by a vet:

  • Exam fee: $75 plus mileage
  • Bute: $20 (pain killer)
  • If she needs an x-ray: $100
  • Corrective shoes: $70
  • She may require boots, but they will last him the rest of his life ($150 – $280)

Horses are slaughtered at Fort Macleod where they use a .22 calibre rifle. Footage obtained from that facility shows horses being shot in the face several times and still conscious.

We can’t save them all, but this one has come into my life and I will do everything in my power to not let her suffer that fate.

Please contribute if you can. Every single penny will go toward the purchase, transport, and veterinary care of this horse. Any additional funds will be donated to the facility that has agreed to give her a home. Β

You can contribute via:

Leave a comment, if you can, so that everyone knows where we are with the fundraising.

I will take many pictures of Ringo’s rescue and once in her new home, with her new shoes on!

  1. Erin says:

Small donation sent. I will send more when I can! And want to continue to help other horses.

  2. Shannon Mann says:

I know everyone is waiting to see some video of Ringo!! And, I’m sorry it’s taking so long — I also will take some shots of Ringo’s first vet appointment this afternoon.

I am ridiculously happy! Thank you all so much… I’m overwhelmed with how generous everyone has been! xoxox!

  3. Shannon Mann says:

Wow, this has been one of the most nerve-wracking, heart-wrenching, emotionally exhausting days of my life! I was more scared and nervous today than in all of the years I’ve been at sea. My heart was pounding as the ‘meat horses’ were shuffled through the ring. But in the end we managed to secure Ringo a new home (he went for $650). I’ll write a post tomorrow and update you all with pictures. You can’t even image how incredible it was to see Ringo free in pasture – and we have some other good news as well!!

I love you all so much for making this happen!!!

    Good night my friends!

  4. Shannon Mann says:

We got to the auction and saw a couple of trucks unloading horses but we managed to sneak back to where he was yesterday. Because of the darkness we wanted to be sure it was still him, so we went around the back to where we could get alongside the pen. As soon as we talked to him, he looked over and tried to take a couple of steps our way. We immediately left b/c he is clearly in a lot of pain when he moves. I’m concerned his lameness has worsened and the auction will be reluctant to put him through the ring tomorrow which would mean trying to sell him off behind the scenes.

There is no way that is going to happen. We will be at the auction for sunrise and won’t take our eyes off him.

I will try to post updates throughout the day πŸ™‚

Hang in there Ringo!!! We’re coming for you!!!

  5. Nancy says:

My donation is in the mail! Lots of luck and thanks for what you do!

  6. Shannon Mann says:

Just sent $250 from me and 4 other very kind people who fully supports the effort to save Ringo.

I’m so moved by how everyone has come together for this girl!! She’s so sweet and probably has given so much to her ‘owner’ I’m so happy for her to live out a good life in comfort!

I’ll give her hugs, pats and scratches from everyone here!

  8. Justin Krumb says:

  9. Shannon Mann says:

Thank you so much everyone, I slept well last night knowing how much support we have for Ringo! I love you all!! I want to let everyone know as soon as she becomes ours – I will send a tweet from @byactivist the instant we have her and post here as soon as possible too!

  13. Lisa Ostrikoff says:

    I’m in for $300.

    • Shannon Mann says:

Lisa, That’s crazy generous!! I think we’re going to have enough money raised by tomorrow… so you could even save some for the next one! Not that I’m going to be posting stories like this every day πŸ˜‰

  14. Lacey says:

$20 sent by email money transfer! If he needs anything at all (care wise I’m a vet tech and more then willing to do whatever I can!)

    • Shannon Mann says:

Lacey, thank you so much!! I’m sure he is going to need a little TLC – let’s stay in touch!! It would be great if we found someone to see him on Saturday after the auction.

  15. Betty says:

Shannon: I will send you $50.00. Looks like a great horse. I can’t download your video.

  16. Howdy says:

Bute is currently running approx $4/day. This of course depends on dosage, etc. My stud lives on the stuff. You’ll likely have to increase your estimate unless she heals very quickly.

  17. Greg Bennick says:

A donation is on the way…hope you’re successful in saving this horse! Keep us all posted. I love seeing the support here.

  18. Charlotte Holmlund says:

Just email-transferred $100. Good luck with the rescue! September 15th is my birthday, so it would be the best birthday present ever if he can be saved.

  19. Shannon says:

We just drove by Ringo, he is still there and still standing which is good news. We were reluctant to stop and spend time because there was a lot of activity at the auction.

Hang in there Ringo… We’re coming for you!

  20. Tara Davies says:

$50 donation from my Dad πŸ™‚

  21. Simeon says:

Maribel and I are in for $40. GO RINGO!

    • Shannon Mann says:

Thanks Simeon!! Now we just have to get you here to make the rescue video!! πŸ™‚ Hugs to Maribel too!!

  22. sarah says:

$100 on it’s way to you.

Love you girl. Give Ringo a scratch on the cheek from me.

    • Shannon Mann says:

Sarah, seriously, thank you so much!! That’s a lot of money! You will have to come out and visit Ringo!

  23. Evan Clifford says:

    Im in for $100

    • Shannon Mann says:

Evan, that’s so appreciated! Wow! That will go a long way towards her care! I love all of you!!!

  24. Barb says:

Great job Shannon – keep up the good work, you are an angel!

  25. Lorne & Petula says:

Lorne & I are in for $ 40.00. Good luck, one lucky guy.

  26. Tommy says:

    $50.00 uecie

  27. Karen Barker says:

Don’t give her any more carrots if he’s foundered. Lots of sugar in carrots!

    • Shannon Mann says:

Yes, I know!! I feel horrible… I didn’t know what the condition was when I gave him carrots. He’s also in a pen with an excess amount of hay, but no grain thankfully. Do you know of anything else I can take him besides a little love?

  28. Karen Barker says:

I can contribute some money, maybe $40.00. I also have about 300 mls of bute if you want that. It’s fresh, nothing wrong with it, I used it for my horse who also foundered.

    • Shannon Mann says:

Thank you Karen!! We would definitely appreciate the bute as well!! I wish I could give it to him tonight…

      • Karen Barker says:

The bute is strawberry-flavoured πŸ˜€ He’ll like it! Where do i send the money, Shannon? You need it by Saturday? I’m in Calgary

  29. Shannon Mann says:

Just got a call from a friend who chooses to remain anonymous. He’s in for $20 as well! Just wanted to let everyone know. Thank you all so so so very much. I just can’t bear the thought of her going to slaughter.

  30. Sue says:
